Conflict analisys and intervention strategies, and agile leadership in post-conflict environments
About the training
In today’s world where we are faced with some of the most challenging conflicts in decades from civil wars, uprisings, poverty, to human rights- and environmental-related, and violent extremism and terrorism, a comprehensive conflict analysis is required to allow those involved in conflict sensitive work at the local, subnational, national, regional or international level to plan their interventions (large or small scale) based on sound evidence.
The six-day training was comprised of the following main tracks:
- International security diplomacy – conflict analysis and intervention strategy
This part of the training employed a systematic approach, integrating theory and practice to increase participants’ understanding of conflicts and interventions, and enhance their capacities in planning successful interventions (e.g. projects in their communities).
- Engagement with International Organizations and the Diplomatic Community
This part involved visit to Vienna-based International Organizations and Permanent Missions/Embassies
- Agile Leadership in Post-Conflict Environment
This track introduced to participants aspects of leadership development, as well as leadership styles.
- Social Activities in and outside Vienna
This part involved visits to the main Sites in Vienna/Austria
Outcomes of the training
The training provided participants with:
- A theoretical framework for conflict, security, peace, and interventions;
- A comprehensive process for conflict analysis;
- Practical tools for diagnosing and understanding conflict situations, and conflict dynamics, through the lenses of human security;
- A framework for developing strategies for interventions, conflict management and conflict resolution;
- International security and conflict analysis toolbox.
- Knowledge about Agile Leadership and how it supports delivering cohesion and sustainability in post conflict environments;
- Fundamental tools to expand influence and effectiveness as a leader;
- Understanding of the qualities and behavior of effective leaders;
- Knowledge about the dimension of a full range of leadership styles;
- Insight into preferred style to identify strengths and improvement opportunities;
- Understanding of the challenges of working with people with various styles;
- Knowledge about effective ways to influence others;
- An action plan to help you become a more effective leader
Trainer
Billy Batware
Billy is an expert in international security with personal and professional experience and expertise in conflict resolution. He is a certified trainer and works for the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime in Vienna where he is responsible for transnational organized crime projects. After leaving his country Rwanda in 1994 where he experienced conflicts first-hand, Billy studied diplomacy and international security in Vienna, Austria and lived and worked in conflict-affected countries. Billy has been conducting conflict analysis trainings since 2012 and has trained more than 300 people from all over the world. Billy is a guest lecturer of international security and development, a regular speaker at international conferences and the founder of several human security initiatives namely the United for Education and Sustainable Futures, Regional Academy on the United Nations, and International Security and Conflict Analysis Network.
Elena Ardelean
Elena is a Governance professional driven by a sense of purpose and a desire to contribute, add value and shape cultures. Since her post-graduation studies in International Security from Sciences Po Paris, Elena has been working as a change agent on a wide range of development projects for various international organizations, including the World Bank, the European Bank of Investment, and the private sector. Elena designs and delivers trainings dealing with topics such as good governance, leadership, strategic organizational change, and strategic management. She trained groups of civil servants, youth and NGOs in a.o. France, Bulgaria, Germany and Romania. Elena holds a Master’s degree in International Security from Sciences Po Paris, has studied Philology and Cultural Studies at the University of Vienna, Austria.
